Cervical Cancer Screening

Cervical cancer screening, often called a smear test, is an important check that helps identify changes in the cervix before they become more serious. It is a preventative test, not a test to diagnose cancer, and it can play an important role in protecting long-term women’s health.

At Well Life Clinic, we provide private cervical cancer screening in a calm, confidential and supportive setting. Our clinicians understand that some patients feel nervous or uncomfortable about smear tests, so the appointment is handled with care, privacy and clear communication.

What is Cervical Cancer Screening?

Cervical screening checks the health of the cervix, which is the opening to the womb from the vagina. During the appointment, a small sample of cells is taken from the cervix and sent to a laboratory for testing.

The sample is usually checked for high-risk types of human papillomavirus, known as HPV. Certain types of HPV can cause changes to cervical cells over time. If HPV is found, the same sample may then be checked for abnormal cell changes.

Why Cervical Screening Matters

Cervical screening is important because it can help identify early changes before cancer develops. These changes can often be monitored or treated if needed, reducing the risk of cervical cancer in the future.

Many cervical cell changes do not cause symptoms, which is why regular screening is important even if you feel well. At Well Life Clinic, your clinician will explain the purpose of the test clearly and answer any questions before the screening takes place.

When to Book a Cervical Screening Appointment

You may choose to book a private cervical screening appointment if you are due for a smear test, have missed a previous screening, would like faster access, or prefer to have the test carried out in a private clinic environment.

A cervical screening appointment may be suitable if:

  • You are due or overdue for cervical screening
  • You would like a private smear test
  • You have previously had HPV or abnormal cells
  • You want to discuss previous cervical screening results
  • You feel anxious about having a smear test
  • You prefer a longer, more private appointment
  • You want women’s health advice alongside screening

In the UK, cervical screening is routinely offered to women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64. Current NHS guidance states that eligible patients are invited every 5 years, although some patients may be invited more regularly depending on previous results.

Symptoms Should Not Wait for Screening

Cervical screening is for people without symptoms. If you have symptoms, you should book a medical appointment rather than waiting for a routine smear test.

Symptoms that should be checked include unusual vaginal bleeding, bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, bleeding after menopause, changes in vaginal discharge, pain during sex, or pain in the lower tummy, pelvis or lower back. These symptoms can have many causes and do not always mean cancer, but they should be assessed properly.

At Well Life Clinic, your clinician can discuss your symptoms, arrange appropriate checks and advise on whether cervical screening, further tests or referral may be needed.

What Happens During the Appointment?

Your appointment will usually begin with a short discussion about your health, menstrual history, previous smear tests, HPV results, symptoms, contraception and any concerns you may have.

The screening test itself is usually quick. You will be asked to lie on an examination couch, and a small instrument called a speculum is gently used to allow the clinician to see the cervix. A soft brush is then used to collect a small sample of cells.

Your comfort and privacy are important throughout the appointment. The clinician will explain each step before it happens, and you can ask to pause or stop at any time.

Understanding Your Results

Your cervical screening result may show that no high-risk HPV was found, which usually means the risk of cervical cell changes is low. If high-risk HPV is found, the laboratory may check the sample for abnormal cells.

If abnormal cells are found, you may need further assessment, such as a colposcopy. This does not mean you have cervical cancer. It means the cervix needs closer review to decide whether monitoring or treatment is required.

At Well Life Clinic, your results will be explained clearly, and your clinician can guide you on the next steps if follow-up is needed.

HPV and Cervical Health

HPV is very common, and many people will have it at some point in their lives. In most cases, the body clears HPV naturally without causing problems. However, some high-risk types of HPV can remain in the body and may lead to cervical cell changes over time.

Having HPV does not mean you have cancer. It also does not mean you have done anything wrong. A positive HPV result simply means further monitoring may be needed to protect your cervical health.

Support for Nervous Patients

Many patients feel anxious about smear tests. This may be due to embarrassment, discomfort, previous difficult experiences, trauma, cultural concerns or simply not knowing what to expect.

At Well Life Clinic, we take a sensitive and respectful approach. You will be given time to ask questions, understand the process and feel as comfortable as possible before the test begins.

Cervical Screening and Women’s Health

Cervical screening can also be a useful opportunity to discuss wider women’s health concerns. These may include periods, contraception, menopause symptoms, vaginal discomfort, pelvic pain, sexual health or recurrent infections.
If you have other concerns, your clinician can advise whether they can be discussed during the same appointment or whether a separate women’s health consultation would be more suitable.
