Skin Ageing Treatment in Altrincham
What is Skin Ageing?
Skin ageing is a result of biological changes in the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis, extending right down to the muscular and skeletal components as natural degradation occurs. In the epidermis, barrier function is reduced causing an increase in trans epidermal water loss (TEWL). TEWL is the diffusion of water from the dermis and epidermis which eventually evaporates from the skin, causing dehydration and sensitivities. Skin cell turnover slows, causing rough, uneven texture and pigment production changes, exacerbated by harmful UV rays.
In the dermis, collagen and elastin and hyaluronic acid levels decrease leading to reduced firmness, elasticity, and hydration. This results in fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, and uneven skin tone.
Ageing Skin Treatment FAQs
How do Ageing Skin present?
The visible ageing process varies from person to person, common skin changes include:
- Dehydration
- Dull appearance
- Rough texture
- Fine lines & wrinkles
- Loss of elasticity or a slower “snapback” when skin is pulled
- Discolouration and/or uneven skin tone
- Lack of suppleness and fullness (more sallow appearance)
What are the causes of Skin Ageing?
Hypodermis ageing is marked by the loss of fat in the face, which leads to decreased fullness, as well as more prominent wrinkles and jowling.
Ageing of the skin can be classified into two categories: intrinsic and extrinsic.
Intrinsic ageing, known as natural or chronological ageing, normally begins in our mid-20s and is determined by genetics and certain internal factors that are uncontrollable.
Extrinsic ageing accounts for upto 90% of skin ageing and is largely controllable. The most common causes are:
- Sun exposure- the major cause, often referred to as photoaging
- Pollution and environmental stressors
- Lifestyle choices, such as insufficient sleep patterns, smoking and alcohol consumption
- Stress
The good news is that you can reverse some of this damage and prevent future negative effects on the skin.

Obagi Blue Radiance Peel
A chemical peel is a treatment used to improve skin texture and tone. An acid is applied to the skin to lower the pH, which loosens the connections between dead skin cells, including exfoliation and stimulating new cell growth. This process causes superficial layers of dead skin to peels off, revealing a smoother and more radiant complexion. Chemical peels dimmish many signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles, discolouration, and uneven texture & tone, they can be used on the face, neck, decollate and the hands.
SkinPen Precision Microneedling
This treatment creates micro injuries in the skin to induce the body’s natural healing process. The body will produce collagen to that affected area, laying down new elastin fibres. The production of new collagen and elastin fibres results in the improvement of fine lines, wrinkles, skin elasticity, texture, and tone.
Cosmelan Depigmentation Programme
Chemical peels deliver high concentrations of exfoliating acids to the skin to brighten the complexion, even skin tone and to improve the appearance of spots and wrinkles. In the case of patients with dark spots, a peel can help fade the spots but the blemish will appear again if the mechanisms that produce it are not treated. The cosmelan® method visibly removes and attenuates spots (just like a peel) but it most importantly provides a regulating action as it corrects the overproduction of pigmentation to prevent the spots’ reappearance. While peelings act on the surface of the problem, cosmelan® treatment targets the origin. The production of new collagen and elastin fibres results in the improvement of fine lines, wrinkles, skin elasticity, texture, and tone.

Lumecca is also effective in treating hyperpigmentation and stimulating collagen production for smoother, more even skin. The procedure is quick, non-invasive, and requires minimal downtime.
